Fair treatment is owed to everyone, and most people face the system alone.
Aequitas Consulting is built for people returning from incarceration in Berkshire County, and because that principle holds for everyone, our practice is open to anyone moving through systems that were never built to be faced alone. We stand with you whether or not the law has a name for what happened, across advocacy, reentry career consulting, and a twenty week program for building a foundation from the ground up.
What we do
Reentry support in this county is built almost entirely for people starting from zero. Aequitas is built for everything after that, and for anyone the existing system was never designed to serve.
The terms behind every engagement
Not a mission statement on a wall. The operating principles of the practice, and the reason clients trust it.
Proximity as Credential
This practice was built by someone who navigated reentry in this county under the same real world conditions many clients face. That lived proximity is not a backstory. It is part of the credential the work rests on.
Strategy Over Sympathy
Honest guidance, realistic options, and a clear path forward, built around where each client actually is rather than a standard template.
Fair Treatment, Named or Not
Where a legal protection exists, we use it. Where none does, we build the strongest available path from what remains. The aim does not change.
What we do
Three lines of work, held to one standard. Each begins with a conversation, not a contract.
Client Advocacy
Most people come to Aequitas with one of a few situations. You are being treated unfairly in housing, at work, or by a public office. A record is standing between you and a job, an apartment, or another matter. Someone is harassing or threatening you and no one is acting. Or an agency has stalled, denied, or ignored you and you cannot get a straight answer.
If your situation looks like any of these, or sits somewhere in between, it belongs here. Much of this work is for people the law does not fully account for, and none of them are turned away for that.
- 01A clear, dated recordYour account of what happened, taken down in your own words and kept on file so the record holds.
- 02The right venueSorting whether your matter belongs before an agency such as the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination or the Attorney General, or is better handled through mediation or a court order.
- 03Action on paperComplaints prepared, demand and records request letters that put an institution on notice, and referrals to attorneys and legal aid when a matter calls for one.
- 04Presence in the roomStanding with you in front of the landlord, employer, or agency involved, at the meeting or the hearing, not only on paper.
- 05ConfidentialityYour information stays between us. No one is contacted without your written permission, with only the narrow exceptions the law requires of anyone.
Reentry Consulting
Every existing program in this county treats returning citizens as people starting from scratch. If you came home with a degree, a trade, real work history, or professional experience, you need something different: strategic, individualized support built around where you actually are.
Engagements run as long as you need to reach your goal. Sessions are $150, with a sliding scale available, and what is sustainable for you is discussed honestly before any engagement begins.
- 01A professional narrative that leadsPosition your record as evidence of resilience and professional value, and frame that conversation before an employer frames it for you.
- 02Career targets that fit your backgroundIdentify the real opportunities and educational pathways that exist given your position, not a generic list.
- 03A documented planLeave every engagement with a written plan for the next stage of your professional life.
- 04Follow throughEmployment status and career progression tracked at 90 days and 12 months after each engagement ends.
Pre Workforce Development
Employment readiness is not a resume and a practice interview. It is understanding how professional environments function, having a financial foundation, knowing your rights, and being connected to people who will give you a fair shot. Twenty weeks, five phases, from pre workforce basics through civic leadership.
Readiness
The professional and life skills most programs skip, the ones that prevent job loss in the first thirty days.
Foundations
Orientation, community agreements, identity and self authorship, financial literacy, and legal rights.
Stability
Housing, health, and the practical infrastructure that makes holding a job possible.
Workforce
Professional communication, workplace culture, interviews, and connection to fair chance employers and training.
Leadership
Civic engagement and a confirmed next step for every participant: enrollment, certification, or employment.
A practice built for what comes after zero
Fair treatment is owed to everyone, and most people face the system alone. Aequitas exists to change that, one client and one cohort at a time.
Aequitas Consulting is a professional services practice in Berkshire County for people returning home from incarceration. Reentry support here is built almost entirely for people starting from zero, and there is little for the person who comes home with education, work history, or professional experience intact, and little for anyone navigating a system that was never built to be faced alone. Aequitas is built for both.
The practice holds three lines of work to one standard. Client advocacy stands with residents facing unfair treatment in housing, at work, or before a public agency, whether or not the law fully names the situation. Reentry consulting gives returning professionals individualized career strategy that treats a record as evidence of resilience rather than a liability to manage around. And a twenty week pre workforce development program builds the professional, financial, and practical foundation to enter the workforce prepared, moving from first principles through civic leadership. Because the principle of fair treatment holds for everyone, the practice is socially inclusive and open to anyone who needs it, not only those returning from incarceration.
Aequitas is a new and growing practice. The founding cohorts and first engagements are underway now, building the outcome data, the fair chance network of employers and housing providers, and the referral partnerships that make each line of work more effective. What is being built here is a durable piece of infrastructure this county did not have, and it is being built to last.
How we work
Proximity as Credential
This practice was built by someone who navigated reentry in this county under the same real world conditions many clients face. That lived proximity is not a backstory. It is part of the credential the work rests on.
Strategy Over Sympathy
Honest guidance, realistic options, and a clear path forward, built around where each client actually is rather than a standard template.
Reframing as Power
Clients are taught to identify where their lived experience creates real professional value and to lead from that place, not to explain it away.
Infrastructure First
Readiness is built before the door, through financial foundations, rights knowledge, professional culture, and a vetted network of providers.
Equity Without Charity
People returning from incarceration deserve the same quality of strategic support anyone else would pay for, priced and delivered as professional services.
Fair Treatment, Named or Not
Where a legal protection exists, we use it. Where none does, we build the strongest available path from what remains. The aim does not change.
